In November 2008, after six years, The Gallery Premises at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre closed down. To commemorate a space that became known for its ability to create conditions for experimentation and the emergence of new talent, The Trinity Session decided to launch The Premises Book. This was made possible through the generous support of the Joburg Theatre.

Presentation by The Trinity Session on
Positions in flux: On the changing role of the artist and institution in the networked society
Friday, May 8th, 2009

Organised by Susanne Jaschko and the Netherlands Media Art Institute (www.nimk.nl), Amsterdam
Symposium venue: Trouw Amsterdam Wibautstraat 131, Amsterdam

The symposium ‘Positions in flux: On the changing role of the artist and institution in the networked society’ centered on some of the major parameters for the current and future development of contemporary art. In particular it reflected on the aspect of cultural sustainability of art projects, art and technology initiatives and art curating. ‘Positions in flux’ offered international artists, theoreticians, critics, cultural producers a platform to initiate a truly critical debate. The symposium was designed for a broad audience working in the field of contemporary culture and art, with a desire to understand what comes ahead and how to respond to these changes on an artistic or institutional level, to envision the future in our field and to provide us with the necessary information to make choices for a meaningful and sustainable development of society and culture.

BUSINESS DAY AND JAGUAR ART TOUR

busdayart

On Saturday 7 March, the Trinity Session guided a select number of special Business Day and Jaguar guests on a curated tour of Johannesburg’s rapidly evolving artistic and cultural landscape. While the tour was aimed at introducing guests to the current offerings of the contemporary art market, the tour struck a balance between contemporary art galleries and the dynamic politics of art in the public domain. Special thanks to Anthea Moys for her tailor-made performance (image).
