The relationship between a technological and meditative space is a recurring theme in the work of Brad Hammond. The emergence of cyberspace brings with it a dynamic way of representing unexplored fields within our consciousness. This area of interest finds its expression in Hammond's work through wax etchings and video. The wax work (’Transmission Still #1’, 2001) represents a freeze-frame from the video, which is slowly worked up to resemble static or interference. The emphasis here is on the creation of a meditative field, without centre or edge, rather than a narrative or political image. The process of re-making a digital image is meditative in that it takes a long time and through this there is an attempt to imbue the electronic with a mindful awareness, shifting the attention away from the materialist fascination with machines, into the realm of human consciousness. The video (’Transmission’, 2000) is in effect a feedback painting whereby frequencies are re-routed back into their source, creating 'impulsive' portraits of the inner, electric life of the machine. As last years winner of the ABSA Atelier competition, Brad is currently residing at the Cité International des Arts in Paris.
