Identity & Difference is created through a series of digital three-dimensional animations. These animations consist of a virtual simulation of a deck of cards that is manipulated through a range of effects. The resulting images are characterized by dynamic, weightless and ephemeral qualities that transfigure the material nature of the cards themselves.
This animation consists of a visual dialogue between two screens. This was conceptualized in order to create a metaphor for information exchange. The artwork refers to the transmission, duplication and interpretation of data. Typically, data transmitted over the inter-net is coded into pulses of light that is transmitted through fiber-optic cables, and subsequently decoded into information. Through the animation process, I have created a visual metaphor that represents this transformation.
The title Identity & Difference refers to several aspects of this artwork. Firstly, it suggests the dual nature of a deck of cards, which is both a unifying series or a random sequence. The back of the cards is characterized by a uniform identity, while the faces displays a random sequence of difference. Secondly, the circle of cards is rendered out in variable perspectives, creating a multitude of readings. This refers to the manner in which information is disseminated and appropriated, identity reformulated through the process of differentiation.
