Context: An Exploration of Value in Four Parts by Alison Kearney
Bring an object to exchange
for a small artwork to participate in the project "Put Something
In to Get Something Out"
Artist's Statement:
Inside the Melbourne Museum, in the section titled “Australian
History”, there is an authentic kitchen-set from the Australian
soap opera Neighbours. About Context showcases artworks made during
a three month residency in Melbourne, in which I explored issues to
do with value and culture through engaging with The Melbourne Museum,
a cultural history museum. Parts One and Two of this exhibition include
the documentation of a series of performances that were done inside
and outside the Melbourne Museum. During the performances members of
the public were invited to swap anything of my collection for an item
of theirs: they could take something out if they put something in. Through
this I began to interrogate notions of cultural value and audience participation
in the process of making works of art. Part four of About Context, titled
Put Something in to Take Something Out will continue this exploration.
To participate in the making of this artwork, gallery visitors are invited
to bring any small object to exchange in the gallery space.
